Il premio è stato chiamato "Carling Premiership Player of the Month" (1994–2001), "Barclaycard Premiership Player of the Month" (2001–2004) e attualmente "Barclays Player of the Month".
Carling introdusse nella stagione 1993-1994 i premi "Manager of the Month" e "Manager of the Season", in aggiunta agli esistenti premi di "Player of the Year" assegnati dalla "Football Writers' Association" e "Professional Footballers' Association".
