Friend è stato membro dell'Astronomical Society of the Pacific Minutes of the Meeting of the Newly Elected Board of Di-rectors, January 29, 1946, Publications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, vol. 58, n. 340, pag. 75, febbraio 1946 e della Royal Astronomical Society .

Il 17 gennaio 1941 ha coscoperto la C/1941 B1 Friend-Reese-Honda . Il 22 novembre 1945 ha coscoperto la C/1945 W1 Friend-Peltier George Van Biesbroeck, Comet notes: Comet Friend-Peltier, Popular Astronomy, vol. 54, pag. 50, gennaio 1946.
