La 54ª edizione dei Grammy Awards si è svolta il 12 febbraio 2012 allo Staples Center di Los Angeles. Lo show è stato trasmesso sul canale statunitense CBS, ed è stato presentato da LL Cool J.
L'artista più premiata di questa edizione è stata Adele che si è aggiudicata sei statuette, eguagliando il record di maggiori vittorie di un'artista donna solista detenuto da Beyoncé con il progetto discografico I Am... Sasha Fierce nel 2010. Grazie alla vittoria nelle categorie all'album dell'anno per 21 e canzone dell'anno e registrazione dell'anno per Rolling in the Deep, Adele è divenuta la seconda artista donna solista a riuscirci in un'unica cerimonia dopo Carole King nel 1972. Grazie alla vittoria nel 2009 nella categoria miglior artista esordiente, Adele è divenuta la seconda artista nella storia della premiazione a vincere in tutte e quattro le categorie generali dopo Christopher Cross nel 1981.
Il 7 febbraio 2012, in seguito alla morte di Etta James avvenuta il 20 gennaio 2012, la Recording Academy ha annunciato una performance in suo onore da parte di Alicia Keys e Bonnie Raitt nel corso della cerimonia. Il giorno prima della cerimonia era venuta a mancare Whitney Houston, modificando la scaletta prevista per la serata con l'interpretazione di I Will Always Love You da parte di Jennifer Hudson per onorarla.
