Lavorò presso il British Museum, studiando soprattutto la tassonomia degli uccelli, degli insetti (in particolar modo i Lepidotteri) e degli aracnidi. Pubblicò anche studi sui ragni dell'Australia, delle Galápagos, del Madagascar ecc.
