Noto per aver condotto la sua ricerca nei giardini di Kew.
Suo padre era protestante; trascorse i suoi primi anni in Russia, e successivamente si trasferì a Kew, in Inghilterra, dove aveva anche lasciato i suoi esemplari botanici.
