La cerimonia è stata trasmessa dalla CBS e condotta da LL Cool J per il quinto anno consecutivo. Le candidature sono state annunciate il 7 dicembre 2015, vedendo il rapper statunitense Kendrick Lamar essere l'artista con più candidature con undici, divenendo il rapper con il maggior numero di candidature in una singola edizione e il secondo artista nella storia della premiazione dopo Michael Jackson che ne ottenne dodici nel 1984.
Lamar ha ottenuto il maggior numero di vittorie con cinque, seguito dalla cantante Taylor Swift con tre, incluso il premio all'album dell'anno per 1989 divenendo la seconda artista donna a vincere nella categoria due volte, e dal gruppo statunitense Alabama Shakes, anch'essi con tre premi vinti.
